All volunteers must first register their presence and then register for one Team activity for the day. All volunteers are encouraged to bring a bag of rice of any size.

Volunteers will remove rice from larger bags and make 5# bags of rice

Volunteers will receive full bags of rice, remove the air and close the bag

Event Details

A Day of Service for all 

to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

on Janaury 16 from 9am to 1pm

You are invited to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday by participating in a Day of Service on Monday, January 16 sponsored by Lutherans in Metro Atlanta and Clarkston Community Center.   Youth and adults will gather at the Clarkston Community Center to work on the following projects:

  • Project 1 - Packaging Rice for Refugee Families - for Lutheran Services of Georgia
  • Project 2 - Pots & Pans Kitchen Kits for Refugee Families - for Lutheran Service of Georgia 
  • Project 3 - Hygiene Kits Assembly - for Clarkston Community Center
  • Project 4 - Outdoor Community Clean-up - for Clarkston Community Center - 

9:00 AM - Gathering & Welcome 

9:30 AM to 1:00 PM - Serivce  Project Time

1:00 PM - Community Celebration   

 

Important Information:

This is a free activity open to all who wish to serve sponsored by Lutherans. You are not required to bring anything other that your willingness to serve.  

 

The following information may be useful as you plan for your day of service. 

  1. MLK Day of Service begins with our gathering promptly at 9am.   
  2. Individual projects are scheduled for 3-4 hours (estimated completion).  All projects should be complete before 2pm.
  3. Outdoor Community Clean up projects could be cancelled if weather is inclement.  

 

About the Projects


 

·         Rice for Refugees Project | Collect bags of rice | Larger bags are more economical | Rice will be packed into family-sized bags to be distributed to newly arrived refugees resettled by Lutheran Services of Georgia.

o    Please collect large bags of rice and bring with you to MLK Lutheran Day of Service.  Volunteers will repackage rice into usable packages that will be given to refugee families in the Atlanta area.

 

·         Pots & Pans for Refugee Project | Collect pots and pans | Miscellaneous pots and pans will be boxed up into sets for the apartments of newly-arrived refugees resettled by Lutheran Services of Georgia.

o    Please collect pots, pans and flatware and bring with you to MLK Lutheran Day of Service for packing in Kitchen Kits for the first home of refugee families resettled by LSG  

 

Here’s what we need (new or used}:

Sauce Pans (any size)

Frying Pans

Soup Pot

Flatware

 

Dutch Oven

Baking Sheets

Roasting Pan

 

 

·         Other project materials needed: extra heavy duty garbage bags to pack each kitchen kit in; Extra large zip lock bags for flatware (1-2 gallon size),

·         Children will make “Welcome” cards to go with each kitchen kit (materials provided by LSG)

 

 

·         Hygiene Kits | Collect the following list of toiletry items for kits assembly

 

Toothpaste

Toothbrush

Shampoo

Deodorant

Soap

Wash cloth

Lotion

Lip Balm

Socks

Feminine products

Shave Cream

Razor

 

 

·         Community Clean-up | With assistance from the Clarkston Development Foundation, teams of volunteers will  go to various sites in the City of Clarkston to complete outdoor projects that includes cleaning, removing, bagging and helping to improve the community.  These projects are subject  to cancellation due to inclement weather.
